Follow the White Rabbit

Philosophy of Mind Select Bibliography – Consciousness Studies.

Thomas Henry Huxley once compared the emergence of consciousness from physical nervous tissue to Aladdin's magic lamp: just as astonishing as the genie appearing when the lamp is rubbed, so too was the birth of an entire inner universe from the material processes of the brain.

Years have passed, yet Huxley's sense of wonder has not entirely grown old. This lamp still stands before us today as an object that scientists, artists, and philosophers touch with both caution and great excitement. And still, no one has fully discovered what lies inside it. Chalmers calls this the "hard problem"; Seth calls it the "real problem." However we choose to name it, we still seem to be holding a living, resistant, and captivating riddle in our hands.
